AWARDED
ONE OF CHARLOTTE'S 10 BEST FOR "SUPERIOR SERVICE" OF ALL
BUSINESSES

It all started in 1981 with a band Vinny Esposito
had called “Split Decision” & a PA he owned. For a July
4th party on the beach on Long Island, NY, the band was
not available to play, so Vinny took his PA, made some
tapes and DJ’d the party. The next door neighbor came
over to inquire about the music & then hired Vinny to DJ
his upcoming wedding. The rest is sort of history.
In 1988, Vinny took his PA and some recording gear,
teamed up with a friend & opened a one room rehearsal/
recording studio. They called it “Split Decision
Studios, Inc.” Within a year, they moved to another
location so they could expand to 2 rooms & upgrade to 8
track recordings. By 1991, Vinny now expanded into a 3rd
room that was featured as a huge concert room. It was
used by high profile bands, to others shooting videos,
to actually having multiple band concerts.
In 1994, Vinny teamed up with his new partner, his
wife Diane and cut up that concert room to make 5 more
rehearsal rooms at the same time expanding the recording
studio from 8 track analog to 16 track digital. By 1995,
the studio expanded to a total of 14 rooms and a state
of the art 24 track digital recording set up. While the
studio was growing, the mobile company called "Split
Second Sound" kept growing, doing more DJ work, and
handling live sound for other bands. As well as, Vinny
even playing guitar in a top working NY cover band
called "Diana".
In 1999, Vinny & Diane sold their interest in Split
Decision Studios, but took the mobile company “Split
Second Sound” with them in their move to North Carolina.
Work came quickly as Vinny hooked up with General
Johnson’s company “General Entertainment”. As word of
mouth spread, Vinny & Diane needed to hire & train
assistants to keep up with the demand for their quality
services.
Since moving to NC, Vinny has worked with national
acts like the Sugar Hill Gang, The Original Drifters,
The Shirelles, The Del Vikings, The Coasters, Billy Joe
Royal & Fastball and regional acts like Chairman of the
Board, Continental Divide & Charity Case featuring Ace
from the Kiss 95.1 radio morning show in Charlotte.
Audio Video HQ hired Vinny to mix the live/media feed
at the Charlotte convention center for events like the
2000 NC NASCAR Hall of fame ceremony, Microsoft’s
Corporate Party for 2000 & 2002 & other major events
including a live mix for a Bud light commercial for NBC
during a “Friends” episode. Dodge used Vinny to mix
sound before a NASCAR Race at Darlington in 2002. Vinny
was the New Years Eve host & DJ for the Park Vista Hotel
& Convention Center in Gatlinburg, TN for the 2000, 2001
& 2002. He has mixed at Charlotte’s Speed Street
festival, Center City fest as well as smaller town
events & festivals. Diane put together a version of her
NY band “Diana” and performed a major festival with
Billy Joe Royal and other regional bands.
The reason for growth is “years of experience &
catering the exact needs of his clients, along with a
friendly & positive attitude”, states Vinny. “No client
is too small to get our full attention”. Now Vinny &
Diane have formed partnerships with several talented
MC/DJ’s to form an incredible, yet unique Mobile DJ
company that can do it all. “The key ingredient is all
of our personalities” says Vinny, “We love what we’re
doing & we pass that passion on to the people that hire
us”.
In 2001, the base of the business was 65% live sound.
In 2003, it was 85% DJ, mostly because of such a high
demand & referrals for the outstanding way they work a
party! Because of the surge in business, Vinny’s wife
Diane has taken over most of the office to help, and has
now hired Lora C. to assist with the office duties.
Diane is also one of the featured singers that Split
offers it’s clients. 25 years later our focus is, and
has always been, to exceed every client’s expectations.
We are a full service DJ company that will answer your
phone calls 7 days a week from 10am until 10pm. No
other DJ company offers service like that!
Every year, from 2003 to 2006, business doubled.
So much to the point that in 2006, Split Second peaked
at 200 events in one year for the 1st time. “We then had
to sell off the sound part of the business so we can
solely concentrate on the expanding DJ business and
becoming the best mobile DJ company in NC” says Diane.
Add in the remarkable stat that over 90% of Split’s
business comes from referrals.
As any growing company expands, more talented
people are needed to make it grow and stay successful
and true to its core values. Vinny & Diane have been
adding to the family & now have over a dozen talented
DJ’s and staff members on board. Vinny notes that as
they progress with us, they become partners, not
employees. That’s what makes it a true family business.
We care for them and they care for us and the integrity
of the company’s reputation.
Split’s expansion includes its move into having
live singers at events. The Frank Sinatra singer has
become a favorite. The Band/DJ Combo remains a hot trend
designed for people who want the best of both worlds.
What everybody loves about that it’s just 1 non stop
party mixed back and forth between the band and the DJ.
Split has broken into the Bar/Bat-Mitzvah market (2005)
and is incorporating dancers and new games in 2007. Also
added in 2007 is its focus on corporate team building
events, designed to help companies and employees better
understand each other and have fun in the process.
July 4, 2007 was the 25th anniversary of Vinny’s
first mobile DJ job. When asked why he keeps going he
says “I still have that passion to excel and have fun
with people on their special day or event”. “The back
may ache afterwards, but the love of DJ’ing is still
strong as it was back 25 years ago”. |
